- Aarons won the National Mark of Excellence Award for In-Depth Reporting in 2003; He also won a Green Eyeshade Award, third place for deadline reporting, in 2006 (Society of Professional Journalists).
- In 2003, a report written by CommunicationWorks for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Raising the Standard: A 15th Anniversary Celebration, was honored by Ed Press as one of four national finalists in its publications category.
- CW President Sheppard Ranbom won a national award from the Education Writers Association for his book-length series of articles about Japanese education.
